Description
Nineteen-year old Franklin writes to his father, Samuel Tarbox, expressing grief at his mother's passing and describing his trip back to school at Kent's Hill. Franklin's mother died on October 6, 1848 (the letter is misdated; it would have been written in March 1849).
Franklin was the youngest son of Mary "Polly" Brown and Samuel Tarbox. He sends respects to "V" (Valentine) and Sarah, two of his siblings. His father was a town official, fishing and shipping merchant and gentleman farmer on Westport Island.
The Kent's Hill School founded in 1824 as Maine Wesleyan Seminary is located in Readfield, ME. The "Mansion" where Franklin boarded was a three-story building at the school that housed classrooms, a chapel, a dormitory and a kitchen.
