Telegram From President Eisenhower, Pittsfield, 1958

Contributed by Maine Central Institute

Description

This Western Union telegram was sent to Maine Central Institute's principal Edward Stanley by President Dwight D. Eisenhower congratulating the school on the completion of the J. R. Cianchette Hall of Science in 1958.

The Senators mentioned would be the famous Senator Margaret Chase Smith, good friend and trustee to the school, and Senator Frederick G. Payne, who had previously served as Governor of Maine. The building itself was designed by long-time MCI science instructor Paul Legge.

Although a new Math and Science Center was constructed in the early 2000's, as of 2013, J. R. Cianchette Hall is still used for classrooms.
