Description
John P. Sheahan of Dennysville enlisted in Co. K of the 1st Maine Cavalry in August 1862 at age 21.
Sheahan studied infantry tactics and other military topics and asked his father to help him get a commission -- as he was tired of the life of a private. In March 1864, he was commissioned as a 1st lieutenant in Co. E of the 31st Maine Infantry.
His two younger brothers, Edmund and Henry, joined the 31st at about the same time. Another brother, William, a sergeant in Co. F of the 6th Maine, was killed at Rappahannock Station on November 7, 1863.
After the war, Sheahan became a physician and dentist and practiced in Washington County.
