Description
Valentine Tarbox writes home to invite his sister, Sarah, to what is likely his graduation exhibition from Maine Wesleyan Seminary in 1844. What is now known as Kents Hill School in Readfield, Maine, was founded in 1824 as the Maine Wesleyan Seminary "to better society through education." Valentine started his education at the school in 1841.
Sarah Tarbox was born on January 7, 1823 on Westport Island and lived in Edgecomb until 1828. She was the eighth child of Mary "Polly" Tarbox and Samuel Tarbox of Westport Island. Valentine was the tenth of the Tarbox's 12 children. As evidenced by the "Sarah Tarbox Letters", Sarah and Valentine were not only close in birth order, they were close as brother and sister. They grew up in one of the wealthiest and most influential families on Westport Island.
