Description
This early central school, the only with a high school in Lubec, was located at the corner of School and Church Streets atop the hill in the village. In 2013, the site is now occupied by the Lubec Town Hall and Fire Department.
According to an article bearing this photo in the Lubec Herald newspaper dated Tuesday, October 27, 1915, “The high school was on the second floor, and the grammar and primary school in the first floor.”
In 1894 the school was torn down and replaced about 1894 by the Hilltop School which lasted only 19 years, burning in 1913. A new grade school was erected, with a new high school a few blocks west on Main Street on what was then known as the Knowles lot.
