Description
This drawing appears in an undated, unnamed newspaper clipping as an artist’s rendition of a hoax to separate gold from seawater. Prescott Jernegan and his accomplice Charles Fisher, both originally from Edgartown Massachusetts, arrived in Lubec in 1897. Jernegan and Fisher convinced locals of a business scheme to separate gold from seawater. During their time in Lubec Jernegan and Fisher built one factory for this purpose and started to build a second before they absconded to Europe with their investors’ money in July, 1898.
The various news items on the rear of this clipping cover a broad area of upstate Maine, suggesting that this is a Bangor newspaper.
