Description

While Lubec maintained a dozen or so outlying rural grammar institutions in the early 20th century, the size of the class with students in a narrow age range suggests that this image is of students at the Hilltop School in Lubec village. The Hilltop School was the largest of schools in the Town of Lubec.

The students from right to left are labeled on the back of the photograph as, nearest row second pupil Holman Bagley, fourth Frank Denbow, and fifth Kathleen McCurly.

Second row, from right to left are labeled on the back of the photograph as, second pupil Francis May, third Wallace Davis, fourth Eugene Rier, fifth Darrell Copp, and sixth [unidentified].

Third row, from right to left are labeled on the back of the photograph as, third pupil Dacosta Jones, fourth Gene, fifth Marion Filbert?, Seventh Avis, and eighth Dorothy.

Fourth row, from right to left are labeled on the back of the photograph as, first pupil Harold Jones, Second Vance Stuart, Third Tinker?, fourth Jennie Matthews, and seventh Caroline Denbow.

Around the wall, from left to right are labeled on the back of the photograph as, 1. Clifton Pike, 3 Pauline Morrison, 6 William Baker, 12 Ernest Wilmot, 16 Philip Morrison?, 17 David Johnson, and 18 Floyd McCann.
