Description
Martha Usher Osgood of Bar Mills wrote to her friend Annie Ripley, commenting mostly about family and friends who were visited or expected to visit. She mentions her sister Sarah (known as Ellen) Bacon, Lizzie Chase, and others.
After some discussion of the social visits, she writes, "There may very likely be pecuniary and patriotic reasons to keep me at home." Osgood was a founder of the Buxton-Hollis Soldiers Aide Society.
She wrote that the house in Hollis was "pleasant with the woods and river -- friends and books and music, and last, but not least flowers." She added that she felt it was "almost wicked to be so safe and happy, while all the country is so anxious."
She also wrote, "We are still busy for the soldiers, and must be while the need is so great."
