Description
Martha Usher Osgood (1823-1893) wrote to her friend "Annie" to report on a committee meeting, perhaps in Bridgton, where members were discussing whether to hire Annie -- or any woman -- to teach music to boys. Osgood's future brother-in-law, Nathan Webb, was present at the discussions.
Annie, a musician, had applied for a "situation" and was anxious to hear results of the committee's discussions. Osgood also refers to her own sister Jennie (Jane), also a vocalist and someone she was teaching who would be a student of Annie's if the latter came to the area.
Osgood reported that her sister "Bess" (Rebecca) "had two invitations to go as nurse" in Union hospitals. Osgood noted that her sister "had a strong inclination to go" but needed "plain" dresses made "as they do not wear hoops."
Rebecca Usher did serve as a nurse and kept a diary and letters of her Civil War service.
