Description
Martha Usher Osgood, a widow who lived with her family in Bar Mills, wrote to her friend Annie about the lonely Thanksgiving she and her mother had, and various activities, including the sad death of a friend, Maria Chase, in New Orleans.
She then provided a lengthy description of going to the Carlls to see "a very celebrated spirtualist -- Foster." She wrote that those present were to write on slips of paper names of friends who had died. She wrote, "and of course he had communications from the spirits of most of them - communications that wee stale and flat enough, but proving him a very good clairvoyant."
