Description
Isaac W. Starbird of Litchfield, who was a captain with the 19th Maine Regiment during the Civil War, wrote to Rebecca Usher of Hollis who was a nurse at army hospitals in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Washington, D.C., to thank her for her work during the war and send her a picture of himself.
Starbird was wounded at Gettysburg and encountered Usher at a hospital. He wrote that he wanted her to have a reminder of him "who so thankfully received the many visits y'r kindness prompted you to favor him with."
Starbird, who was 23 when he enlisted, became a colonel and commander of the 19th Maine, and, after the war, became a physician.
