Description
This Native American float was one of twenty floats in the Centennial parade in Princeton on July 5, 1932.
On the float, from left, are Edmund Tomah, George Dana, Ethel Cox, Joseph Socoby, Josephine Socabasin, Wallace Lewey, Louis Neptune, Stella Tomah, Mary Tomah, and Lillian Gabriel.
Wallace Lewey, Chief of the Passamaquoddy Tribe, gave a lecture for the celebration. Indian dances were also performed at the celebration, and attracted a large crowd.
The Passamaquoddy Tribe has one of its reservations on Indian Township which borders Princeton to the north.
In Joyce Carle's book, Delia's Story, Delia Mitchell recalled her mother, Maggie Mell, being good friends with Ethel Cox who, though from Princeton was not a Native American, rode on this float. Carle also attributes Mitchell with saying, "Ethel would come over to our house and my mother would dress her up and she would go and dance with the group."
