Contributed by Waterford Historical Society

Description

Waterford resident, Edgar Stone, better known as "Ned," designed and built this ice cutting machine to saw through 12 inches or more of ice on Keoka Lake (Tom Pond) at Waterford Flat in the 1920s.

The machine was patented in the United States on March 4, 1919 and in Canada on June 10, 1919. The apparatus was a gasoline engine and a circular saw mounted on a substantial sled, capable of being pushed by hand.

Fred Johnson took pictures and sent them with an article to Popular Mechanics magazine.
