Description
This 1906 picture shows the three buildings that were used for schools in Princeton, at that time. The white building on the left is the Masonic Lodge/Primary School building, the center building is the Princeton High School, and the building on the right in the foreground is the Town Hall/Elementary School building. In 1906 the primary grades, first through fourth, were held on the first floor of the Masonic Lodge building. Grades five through nine met on the first floor of the Town Hall, and the remaining High School grades had a separate building.
In 1867 the Town Hall was built, the upper floor to be used for the Town Hall and the lower floor partitioned off into two school rooms. In 1873 the Town of Princeton voted to raise the sum of $300 for the support and maintenance of a Free High School. The Princeton Masonic Lodge was also looking for a meeting house, so they came forward with $700 toward the construction of a new building which would house both the high school and the Lodge. The agreement was for the high school to occupy the bottom floor of the building, and the Lodge would own the two upper stories.
In 1895 a three-story post and beam High School was built on School Street. Princeton's secondary school students were taught in that building until 1968 when the town began tuitioning students to Woodland High School in Baileyville. The town planned to renovate the building for another use, but it was torn down in 1978. Older residents of Princeton have indicated that the closing of the high school brought a quietness to the town that is felt by many, even in 2013.
