Route 198 meets Route 3, Northeast Harbor, ca. 1954

Contributed by Mount Desert Island Historical Society

Description

This photograph is one of many similar photographs found in the private collection of photographs of Charles K. Savage. This series of photos was taken at the intersection of Route 198 and route 3 at the entrance to the section of Northeast Harbor where Savage lived and worked, Asticou.

Savage was outraged that the utility companies were putting poles everywhere in what had heretofore been rural vistas and woodlands. The wires were strung in random patterns and the utility companies were not sharing poles and lines. During the 1950s, Savage spent many months contacting the area utility companies, their crews and outer offices, and public agencies in an attempt to get coordination among them to achieve the removal and relocation of as many poles and wires as possible, to restore the view. In one of his writings, Savage refers to 70 poles that he was able to eliminate from this section of the island and also at Bracy Cove in Seal Harbor.
