Description
The R.E. Lee Camp No. 1 of Confederate Veterans in Richmond sent flyers to institutions in the North seeking assistance for disabled Confederate veterans.
The flyer noted that the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans, had "responded with a noble willingness and fraternal sentiment" but that more help was needed. The flyer apparently went to banks, bankers, manufacturers, insurance firms and merchants.
The "Appeal for Help" notes that the Confederate veterans "have no government to support or provide for them." The R.E. Lee Camp sought funds to organize a veterans home.
