Description
Holman Melcher (1841-1905) and Alice E. Hart, both of Portland, filed their marriage intentions on May 13, 1874 at Portland City Hall. The couple married on May 21, 1874.
Melcher, a native of Topsham, served in the 20th Regiment of Maine Volunteers during the Civil War, having been promoted to captain and breveted a major. Before the war, he attended the Maine State Seminary at Lewiston (later Bates College).
Hart was the daughter of Deacon Henry B. Hart and Sarah Hill Hart.
Melcher, a retail grocer, was a widower. His first wife, Ellen McLellan died in 1872. They had been married four years.
