Description
Portland City Clerk George C. Burgess wrote to Holman S. Melcher on March 6, 1889 to inform him that the Board of Alderman had elected him mayor.
Melcher (1841-1905) was a native of Topsham and attended the Maine State Seminary (later Bates College) before enlisting in the 20th Maine Infantry in 1862. He became a captain in the regiment and was breveted as a major.
He was active in veterans' organizations and worked as a wholesale grocer in Portland. He married Alice Hart in 1874. They had one daughter.
Melcher pasted the letter into a scrapbook that also included numerous Civil War related newspaper clippings.
