Description
Enoch Knight, a lawyer in Bridgton, wrote on Oct. 26, 1861 to Col. George F. Shepley, who was organizing the 12th Infantry Maine Volunteers.
Knight wrote, "We can come any time to camp -- next Wednesday if necessary -- but should like about a week..."
On Nov. 15, 1861, Knight, then age 27, enlisted as captain of Co. E of the 12th Maine.
Shepley, also a lawyer, was U.S. attorney for the district of Maine before the war. The 12th Regiment was sometimes called the regiment of "Democrats and lawyers."
He also wrote, "The influence of the fife and drum is wonderful." He concluded, "I return to you this Sat. morning 50 men -- in general count -- but Monday look out for several --"
