Description

Pvt. John Stewart of Cherryfield, a soldier in Co. G of the 6th Maine Infantry, wrote to "friend" Samantha Leighton of Cherryfield about a review that his regiment participated in along with 89 other infantry regiments, 11 cavalry regiments, and more than 100 cannons.

Gen. George McClellan and President Abraham Lincoln reviewed the troops. Stewart wrote that troops cheered when the officials arrived and more than 100 bands played.

He wrote that "some of the rebels are getting kind of sick of fighting against us" and said that 3,000 rebel troops had "laid down their arms" and surrendered to the Union troops.

The end of the letter is missing.
