Description
This photograph shows the Dixfield House, which was also known as The Androscoggin Hotel and later the McIntire Place, beside the Tuscan Opera House located on upper Main Street in Dixfield, as they looked around 1895. These buildings sit at the entrance of town when crossing Webb River Bridge coming into Dixfield.
The Dixfield House was a twenty-five room hotel. In 1936, then owned by Nancy McIntire, the hotel suffered a devastating fire. The contents were destroyed, but the building was saved. After that the property was divided into rental apartments and continues to function as rental apartments, as of 2013.
The Tuscan Opera House was built for the Independent Order of Odds Fellows (IOOF) and Rebekahs around 1895. The building was four-storied. It had a kitchen in the basement, a theater and a dance hall on the ground floor, a balcony and dressing rooms on the second floor, and the lodge on the third floor as well as attic space. The Tuscan Opera House building was used for many years to host all manner of community events. In 2013 the building still stands, but is unused and deteriorating.
