Description
This photograph shows a neighborhood outing on Science Hill in East Dixfield around 1880. Science Hill was so named for its many men of mechanical aptitude and inventors. Two of these such persons were Elisha Parks who made axes and was a temper expert, and Nathaniel Thomas who made salt boxes, clothespins, and butter boxes. Parks is best known for the apple peeler he invented that helped revolutionize the apple industry, especially in East Dixfield. Once a thriving section of town, by 1924 there were only two houses left. Since the latter 1900s, the road is impassable by car.
