Description
The Foster D traveled to offshore islands to purchase lobsters and clams for the Jameson & Wotton Wharf. Here it is tied up at Allen Island, surrounded by arc-sided Friendship clamming dories. Old-style lobster pots are piled on the shore.
Betsy Wyeth, wife of artist Andrew Wyeth, bought Allen Island in 1979. By then the island had lost its full-time residents and was only used as a seasonal home by a couple of lobstering families. Wyeth built a large cape-style house and several other buildings in addition to renovating several existing buildings to create a small island community. Allen Island was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
