Contributed by Mexico Historical Society
Description
This Symbol of Recognition, or memorial citation, is dedicated to John Edward Barry, who was born in Portland in 1925 and died in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
Barry was brought up in Mexico in a foster family. A suitcase containing a school portrait, letters home, photographs of his birth parents, souvenirs, his Social Security card, a Purple Heart citation, baby shoes, and a number of other items related to his life and World War II service was discovered in the attic of the Rangeley Inn around 2003. The suitcase was eventually donated to the Mexico Historical Society.
