Description
In 1915, the Ladies Relief Corps began the push for a monument in Riverbank Park to honor those who served in the Civil War.
In April 1916, the Westbrook Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument Association was formed. Citizens, schools, and businesses were asked to contribute funds. Mr. and Mrs. Woodbury K. Dana proposed that they would pay for a bronze statue if the association would provide the base and pedestal, and their offer was accepted.
A statue by Theo Alice Ruggles Kitson, known as A. R. Kitson (1871-1932), of Massachusetts was selected to serve as the Westbrook Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument. The statue cost approximately $2500.00, and the granite base and bronze plates were $2854.00. The monument was dedicated on July 4, 1917.
