Contributed by Walker Memorial Library
Description
The south end of the Reading Room of the Walker Memorial Library features the beautifully carved fireplace and portrait of Joseph Walker.
Joseph Walker left a bequest to build a library building for the City of Westbrook to house the books of the Westbrook Social Library, one of the earliest libraries in the state.
Prior to the opening of the library in 1894, the books were housed in a wooden bookcase with doors in various storefronts or in the home or barn of the current librarian.
