Description
This photograph shows the Hamlin carding mill in South Waterford as it looked around the turn of the century. In 1887 W.K. Hamlin purchased the Hapgood Carding Mill, in which early 19th century English wool machinery was still in operation and an original waterwheel mechanism was also still used.
The wool business, in Waterford, proved to be seasonal and responsive to customer demand. The W.K Hamlin family lived in the house across the street from the Carding Mill. The carding mill was one of several businesses run by W.K.Hamlin, including a lumber mill, a box business, and a creamery.
In the 1960s, the carding mill was taken apart, moved, and reassembled at Old Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts. It was used there as part of the 1820s Village museum.
