Description
This pitcher was one of many used in the large dining room where patrons of the Rock End Hotel came for three meals each day that were included in their price of lodging there. The dining service was a formal table service carried out by a staff of seasonal employees hired by the hotel's owner, Herman LaFritz Savage (1855-1913) and his wife, Wilhelmina "Mina" Falt Savage. As many as 125 guests at a time could be accommodated in the large, airy dining area of the hotel.
The Rock End Hotel, built on Gilpatrick's Cove in 1887, was one of the Mount Desert Island hotels that catered to the summer "rusticators" who escaped to Maine from New York, Philadelphia, Boston, and other Northeast urban areas starting in the 1880's.
