Harbourside Inn, Northeast Harbor, ca. 1955

Contributed by Mount Desert Island Historical Society

Description

This postcard shows the Harbourside Inn as it looked around 1955. The Harbourside Inn is located on Main Street in Northeast Harbor and was built in 1895 as a dining room and clubhouse to be used by nearby residents of the summer cottages across the street.

The building on the front left is the kitchen and dining room area with some accommodations for guests or help above. The building in the rear right is the original clubhouse that had been converted into hotel lodgings with rooms and private baths and/or suites with small kitchens.

The architect for these buildings was Fred L. Savage. The Inn was owned from 1927 to 1979 by Emily Phillips Reynolds and her daughter, Mildred Dolliver Chapman Gilley, descendants of Cora Justina Savage Phillips.
