Description
The Harbourside Inn on Main Street in Northeast Harbor is one of the earliest inns built to accommodate the growing interest in summer residence on Mount Desert Island. The Inn was designed by architect Fred L. Savage and built in 1895 as a dining room and clubhouse for families who had purchased summer cottages across the street as part of one of the first planned cluster developments on the island called "Harbourside."
By 1955, the Inn had converted a portion of the buildings on the hill to hotel rooms with private baths and was operating the dining room not only for guests but also as a place for Sunday dinner, open to the public. The Sunday dinner was planned because that was usually the night that the waitstaff at private homes and other establishments in the area were given the night off and the families staying in the local inns and cottages needed a place to go for the Sunday meal.
The back of the flyer includes information about the accommodations, other amenities, and sights of Mount Desert Island, with contact information for the Inn.
