Description
Thomas Shelvey (1870-ca.1940) lived on Portland’s Adams Street for most of his life, one block from The Portland Company where he worked. Shelvey is seen here in the uniform of the Portland Montgomery Guards, a drill team and Militia Company comprised of young men of Irish decent.
Shelvey was proud of his military association and stayed with the Montgomery Guard through its assimilation into the Maine State Militia and National Guard of the State of Maine. He retired and was honorably discharged as Second Lieutenant, Company E, First Infantry Regiment in October, 1900.
