Description
During the annual Snowroller Day held each year in Monson the antique snowroller is pulled by a team of horses through the streets of Monson. This photograph shows the four-hitch team pulling the roller on Water Street during the February 8, 1975 celebration.
The first snowroller for this area was built in 1914 by Walter Sears of Willimantic. The roller was made primarily of spruce and oak and was equipped with rollers which were approximately six feet wide and five feet in diameter. The roller was last operated as equipment in the winter of 1932/33.
In 1973 the roller was donated to the Monson Historical Society and the first snowroller day was held in 1975 and continues to be a popular event. Although Snowroller Day is held with winter games in town and on the ice the snowroller is a static display at the Museum and no longer operated with a team of horses.
