Description
On August 15, 1945 Monson held a VJ parade in celebration of the announcement that World War Two was over. The townspeople of Monson danced in the streets as the news came over the radio that Japan had surrendered and that American soldiers would soon be home.
In anticipation of the news, businessmen George Pullen and Eugene Bickford had prepared the residents for a parade and ceremony to mark the event. The morning began with a church service to give thanks for a victorious end and to remember those who would not be returning home. At 10 o'clock , lead by patriotic symbol Uncle Sam, the parade began it's way down the Main Street of town. Included in the parade were 50 women dressed in various costumes as shown in this photograph taken following the parade.
