Description
Charles Dyer is the driver of this horse and buggy, all decked out for the 4th of July parade in 1895 in Westbrook. Westbrook Manufacturing Co. began in the early 1830s as the Portland Manufacturing Co. and reorganized in 1858 as the Westbrook Manufacturing Co.
The mills made made cotton duck cloth for sails and tents and sail twine for sewing the sails. During the Civil War, the company did a huge business with the U. S. government making cloth for tents. The driver and the woman at his side are wearing a shirt and dress made from matching plaid fabric, quite possibly manufactured at the gingham mill that company opened in 1881. The mills closed in 1896.
