Contributed by Republican Club through Biddeford Historical Society
Description
A procession lead by a horse drawn carriage with musicians sitting atop of it, is captured here as they progress down Main Street in Biddeford around the turn of the century.
One the balcony of the Nichols block is a banner for the Young Men's Republican Club. The procession and spectators may be gathered to celebrate Biddeford's Republican Day.
Young Republican Clubs began springing up around the United States as early as 1859. They served as a way for men ages 18 to 40 to bond both social and politically while also providing a ready pool of volunteers for political candidates.
