Westbrook Post Office, Westbrook, ca. 1950

Contributed by Walker Memorial Library

Description

This Westbrook Post Office building was built in 1935 on Brackett Street in Westbrook, and continued in that location until 1978, when it was moved to Main Street. When the larger facility opened on Main Street, the Brackett Street building was converted to a commercial property. As of 2013, the Brackett Street building still exists and houses a credit union.

In 1936, artist Waldo Peirce was commissioned to paint an original mural in the post office as part of Roosevelt's New Deal Program. The nine and a half by ten foot mural "Woodsmen in the Woods of Maine" was painted on the wall surrounding the door to the Postmaster's office. When the Post office moved to the Main Street location, the mural was removed and in 1991 the mural was installed, with Postmaster's door as well, in the Portland Museum of Art.
