Westbrook Manufacturing Company, Westbrook, ca. 1890

Contributed by Walker Memorial Library

Description

Westbrook Manufacturing Company was an offshoot of the Portland Manufacturing Company, which began in 1829. The first mill was built in the early 1830s and made heavy cotton duck and canvas used in sails and tents.

The company reorganized in 1858 and became the Westbrook Manufacturing Company. During the Civil War the U. S. Government purchased large quantities of cotton duck to be made into tents for the Union Army.

In 1881 another building was built for the manufacture of gingham.

In March 1896, the Presumpscot River flooded and damaged 1,300 cases of gingham fabric. The mill was to be closed July to September of that year for 5 weeks for repairs to the building, but never reopened.
