Description
This photograph shows a view of Bridge Street in Westbrook with the Westbrook Manufacturing Co. on the left and the Haskell Silk mill on the right side of the bridge spanning the Presumpscot River, as it looked around 1890.
The Haskell Silk mill was in business from 1874 until 1933 and manufactured silk fabrics.
The Westbrook Manufacturing Co. began in 1829 and closed in 1896. They made heavy cotton duck cloth and canvas cloth used in sails and tents, including tents for the Union army during the Civil War. Later they also made gingham cloth.
