Master Sullivans School House, Berwick, ca. 1814

Contributed by Berwick Historical Society

Description

This house was built in 1743 by William Hooper whose occupation was a shoemaker and who also served as a Baptist minister. In 1761 John Sullivan, father of Major General John Sullivan of the Revolutionary War, purchased this house to use as a school house. The house was moved in 1814 from a site near Worcester Brook. The move was done by oxen during the winter months.

In time, the house became the property of the town of Berwick. At an auction in March, 1945 it was sold and was later occupied by Walter Hall who remodeled it. Following a progression of several owners, the building remains on the same site today (2013) on the corner of School Street and Old Pine Hill Road.
