Description
In 1885, when this photograph of Maine GAR officers was taken, there were 130 GAR posts in Maine with a total membership of 8,235. The year was an important one for the Maine GAR as it hosted the Nineteenth Annual Encampment of the National GAR in Portland.
The GAR advocated for veterans' causes, provided camaraderie, and offered financial support to members in need. In addition, it supported charitable causes such as the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, Eastern Branch, and the Maine Military and Naval Children's Home in Bath.
