Civil War cigar relic, Richmond, Va, 1862

Contributed by Maine Historical Society

Description

Major Thomas W. Hyde of the 7th Maine Regiment sent this cigar to John Marshall Brown of Portland with a letter explaining that a soldier, while on picket duty, took tobacco from an estate near Gaines Mills on the Chickahominy River. Hyde wrote, "The men make large numbers of them and we call them the Chickahominy Brand. The tobacco is the best raised in Virginia."

Hyde and Brown's American Civil War military careers took similar paths. Both recent graduates from Bowdoin College, they enlisted in the Union Army. Each rose through the ranks, commanding their own regiments by 1864.

After the war, Hyde returned to Bath where he founded Bath Iron Works. Brown returned to Portland where he worked for his family firm J.B. Brown & Sons.
