Description
Soldier and regimental memorials were common after the war – but most are printed on paper. The oil painting of John Marshall Brown's service in the Civil War includes a written history of his service -- on the red horizontal and vertical lines that cross in the middle -- including his battles and appointments.
Brown (1838-1907) enlisted in Co. S of the 20th Maine Regiment as adjutant on September 1, 1862. He was promoted to captain on June 223, 1863, when he was commissioned into the U.S. Volunteers Adjutant General Department Infantry.
He was promoted to lieutenant colonel of Co. S of the 32nd Maine Infantry on May 5, 1864. He was mustered out on May 10, 1864, and was brevetted a colonel and a brigadier general on March 13, 1865.
After the war, Brown helped run his family's sugar factory and other businesses in Portland.
