Description
The coil of line was cut from the rigging of the foretop of the U.S.S. Cumberland after the Rebel steamer Merrimac sank her at Hampton Roads, Virginia, March 9, 1862.
The Rev. Zenas Thompson, chaplain of the 6th Maine Infantry, obtained the hemp line after the battle. Thompson, of Portland, served as chaplain from July 1861 to July 1862.
