Description
Capt. Granville Sparrow of the 17th Maine kept the key – said to be from a lock on a cell at Libby Prison in Richmond – as a war souvenir.
Sparrow of Portland, enlisted in August 1862 as a sergeant in Co. A of the 17th Maine Infantry. Sparrow, 25 at his enlistment, remained in the regiment until August 1865, having been promoted to lieutenant and captain.
