Description
The Danforth Trust Company operated under the aegis of the National Banks and Trust Company. The president of the bank was Horace Pullen.
When the owners of the Wooden Head Mill overheard the rumors of difficulty, they immediately withdrew their money from the bank. Even though the bank had assets of approximately $125,000, it wasn’t long before the bank had to call in outstanding mortgages.
Louise Estabrook remembered that as a little girl she went to the bank with her father, who had heard the rumors, and withdrew her money — one silver dollar.
Those who heeded the whispered rumors of possible bank failure and withdrew their money were financially secure, but many others packed their belongings and left the area.
The bank closed in about 1928 and never reopened. The building became the Danforth Town Office.
The building to the right of the bank housed a barbershop run for many years by Hudson “Hud” White and then by Sherril Colford, O. J. Darling, and A. J. Brackett. To the left was the Danforth Drug Store.
