Description
"Elevators of both passenger and freight designs were manufactured and installed in multistory buildings all across America. The first elevators were hydraulically powered, and electrically powered elevators were produced a few years later. There are still some Portland Company-manufactured elevators in use today in Portland and other cities. Most of the elevator cars were built of solid oak with an iron-and-steel reinforcing framework."--Fletcher, David H. 'The Portland Company 1846-1982.' Charleston, S.C.: Arcadia Pub., 2002.
