Description
Rebecca Usher of Hollis, who had been a nurse in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., during the Civil War wrote to her sister, Martha Usher Osgood, describing her visit to Portland where she saw and shook hands with Gen. U.S. Grant.
Usher had also wanted to go to Brunswick, where Grant was going to be with Gen. Joshua Chamberlain, but had at first declined because of company at home.
However, Usher finally did go to Brunswick and saw Grant, his wife and four children, Gov. Israel Washburn, Gen. Ayres, Chamberlain, and others.
