Description
This covered bridge was built in 1809 along with its sister span, the North Channel bridge, over the Kennebec River. In the background are the two steeples of the Congregational and the Methodist churches on Skowhegan Island. The builders of these bridges charged tolls for 75 years. This bridge was severely damaged by the flood of 1901, called the "December Freshet," and was replaced with a steel span in 1903.
