Skowhegan trolley car barn, ca. 1920

Contributed by Skowhegan History House

Description

This was the trolley car barn and repair shop of the Somerset Traction Company on Madison Avenue. Starting in 1896, the trolley cars traveled to Lakewood Theater on Lake Wesserunsett and from there to the town of Madison and returned. Seasonally, they connected to steamboats on the lake and the village of East Madison. From downtown Skowhegan, the cars met the Maine Central Railroad and early on connected to the Skowhegan and Norridgewock trolley line as well. Notice the car drivers in the photo who wore top hats. The rapid growth of personal automobile ownership spelled the end for the trolleys in 1929.
