Description
"This is the Brewster House, although the name "Skowhegan Hotel" appears on both fronts. This designation was temporary - probably not employed more than two or three years. Note stagecoach with pair of white horses on Madison Avenue and the black horse harnessed in a sulky just over the crossing on Elm Street. He is a handsome animal and well groomed - undoubtedly trained for racing. The driver wears an odd costume, part of which is a derby hat, and his face seems to be protected or decorated with a full beard. The racing sulkies of that day were all of this high wheel type.
"The sign appears on Madison Avenue at the right, but no one has been able to decipher the wording.
"Mabery was proprietor of the establishment for a time; perhaps during the period that it was known as the Skowhegan Hotel."
